Crocheting the Houndstooth Stitch - Stitch of the Month

Houndstooth. It sounds complicated, but it’s not. You can create this well-known Dior- and Chanel-style print using the pattern from this blog. It’s the perfect crochet stitch for chic and elegant garments. How about a pretty jacket to wear to work?

You’ll be seeing houndstooth more and more in the fashion world. Actually, just about everyone is familiar with this print. You see it in clothing, accessories, and even home decor projects. Most often, we see this tile-like pattern of abstract quadrilaterals in black and white, but of course you can choose any color combination you like.

Lana Grossa Merino Air
merino wool is a high-quality wool that is barely itchy, if at all. Lana Grossa Merino Air is super soft and ideal for knitting luxurious garments. The yarn is lightweight and available in many rich colors.

What do you need?

Scarf Materials:
- 3 balls of Lana Grossa Merino Air, white 008
- 4 balls of Lana Grossa Air in black 020
- size 5.5 Crochet Hook
- 8 small pom-poms

Yarn for the Hat: 1 ball of Lana
Grossa Merino Air, white 008
- 1 ball of Lana Grossa Merino Black 020
- size 5.5 Crochet Hook
- 1 large pompom

Tips:
1: Always crochet 2 rounds using the same color.
2: A long double crochet: Crochet a double crochet into the chain stitch from 2 rows back.
3: Don't cut your yarn; instead, change colors at the start of the New round. Since you'll be coming back to this point anyway, you can pick up your yarn again on the next round.
4: On each round, crochet 1 chain stitch and 1 double crochet in the same stitch. This way, you’ll always have a nice loop to slip your last stitch through. Plus, the edge stays nice and sturdy.

Pied-de-Poule Scarf Pattern:

Start with black and crochet 43 chain stitches, or a multiple of 4 plus 3.

Rows 1 and 2: (black): 1 chain stitch and 1 double crochet in the 2nd chain from your hook. 2 double crochets, *1 chain stitch, skip 1 stitch, 3 double crochets. Repeat from *
Row 3 (white): Chain 1 and work a double crochet in the first stitch. *Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, 1 double crochet, 1 long double crochet in the chain stitch from Row 1, 1 double crochet. Repeat from *. End with 1 chain stitch, skip 1 stitch, 1 double crochet.
Row 4 (white): 1 chain stitch and 1 double crochet in the first stitch. *1 chain stitch, skip 1 stitch, 3 double crochets. Repeat from *. End with 1 chain stitch, skip 1 stitch, 1 double crochet.
Row 5 (black): 1 chain stitch and 1 double crochet in the first stitch. *1 long double crochet in the chain stitch from Row 3, 1 double crochet, 1 chain stitch, skip 1 stitch, 1 double crochet. Repeat from *. End with 1 long double crochet, 1 double crochet.

Repeat rows 2 through 5.

The border:
Crochet with black single crochet stitches. Use 2 single crochet stitches per row. Add one extra chain stitch in each corner. Sew 4 pom-poms to each end.

Houndstooth Hat Pattern:
Start with black and crochet 71 chain stitches, or a multiple of 4 plus 3.

Close the chain with a slip stitch. Crochet as you would for the scarf. Since you’re now crocheting in the round, close each round with a slip stitch in the first loop of the round. Crochet 20 rounds. On the last round, use black yarn to crochet a double crochet in each stitch. Finally, crochet a single crochet in each double crochet. Tie the first round together with a thin piece of yarn and pull it tight. Sew a large pom-pom on top.
