Pride Month
The big Amsterdam Canal Pride isn’t until August, but especially in the United States, June is Pride Month—a themed month dedicated to highlighting the status, emancipation, and acceptance of gay men, lesbian women, bisexuals, transgender people, and others in the LGBTI+ community. There is no official Pride Month in the Netherlands, as the major Canal Pride event always takes place in early August. By getting started on your yarn kits now, your project will be finished well in time for August!
Pride Flag Yarn Kits
To celebrate Pride Month a little bit, we at Yarnplaza have put together yarn kits based on 11 different Pride flags. You can, of course, use these to knit or crochet the corresponding flag, but you can also use them to start lots of other projects! We’re calling on everyone to come up with something creative using one of these yarn kits. To help you get started, we’ve designed a special pattern for (some of) these kits! This pattern is based on the colors of the lesbian pride flag, but you can also follow it exactly using the colors of the gay pride flag, for example. Make your own version of this cute dinosaur or surprise us with a completely original project—we’d love to see it! We’ve listed the flags and what they mean below:
Asexual Pride Flag
General meaning: Asexual: People who do not experience sexual attraction or have no interest in sexual activities.

Aromantic Pride Flag
General meaning: Aromantic: People who have little or no romantic feelings for others or interest in romantic relationships.

Bisexual Pride Flag
General meaning: Bisexual: People who are romantically or sexually attracted to both men and women, or to more than one gender.

Gay Pride Flag
General meaning: Gay: People who feel romantic or sexual attraction to people of the same sex. This flag is specifically intended for gay men.

Lesbian Pride Flag
General meaning: Lesbian: People (primarily women) who are romantically or sexually attracted to other women (or non-men).

Gender-fluid pride flag
General meaning: Gender-fluid: People with a gender identity that is not single-crocheted or that varies or shifts over time or depending on the situation

Non-binary pride flag
General meaning: Non-binary: An umbrella term for gender identities that are not exclusively male or female. People may identify as more than one gender, as having no gender, or as having a fluid gender.

Pansexual Pride Flag
General meaning: Pansexual: People who are sexually, romantically, or emotionally attracted to others regardless of their gender identity or biological sex. For them, gender and/or sex are not determining factors in their attraction to others.

Transgender Pride Flag
General meaning: Transgender: People whose gender identity does not correspond to their biological sex. The term “transgender” can refer, for example, to a man born in a woman’s body, but it is also an umbrella term for, for example, non-binary or gender-fluid people.

Rainbow Pride Flag
General meaning: Rainbow (flag): A flag that symbolizes pride and diversity, and is often displayed as a sign of support for LGBT rights

Progress Rainbow Pride Flag
General meaning: Progress Rainbow (flag): A new version of the rainbow flag. It represents the entire LGBTI+ community, not just gay rights. The colors white, pink, Light Blue, Brown, and Black have been added to the flag. White, Pink, and Blue are the colors of the transgender flag. Brown and Black represent people of color and those living with HIV or AIDS.

Crochet a Dinosaur with a Free Crochet Pattern
For inspiration, Esther from @essiebirdies designed an adorable dinosaur using one of the Yarn Kits. Using the Yarn Kit based on the lesbian flag, she created: Quinty the (queer) Dinosaur! To show that Quinty can be crocheted in all sorts of ways, a second version was also made. So there are lots of different ways to go with Quinty! Oh, and Quinty can even stand upright on its own, so you can place it anywhere without it falling over—pretty handy, right? Download the Quinty pattern here and pick out a nice Yarn Kit to go with it!
