Crocheting a Perfect Circle - One of those things you know you have to do, but why, exactly? Or that typical “oh, right!” moment when you hear a logical answer to a question. The same goes for crocheting a perfect circle. We had an “oh, right!” moment and would love to share it with you! Curious? Read on for the explanation.
Crocheting in the round is always useful. You can use it to make a colorful potholder or Amigurumi. Often, when you start crocheting a circle and increase after every round, you end up with a hexagon after a few rounds. Because you’re always increasing in the same spot, your work gets wider in that area and therefore no longer stays a circle. (“Oh, right!”). To prevent this, make sure to alternate the spot where you increase. If you want to do this neatly, there needs to be a specific pattern to the way you alternate.
We'd like to show you how with this handy example, in which we increase by 6 stitches in every round.
The base is the same for both circles through row 2; after that, you alternate.

Start with a magic ring containing 6 sc, or crochet a chain of 4 stitches, join with a sl st, and work 6 sc into the ring.
Round 1: Double everything (12 sts)
2nd round: *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st.* Repeat *-* (18 sc)

Crocheting a Circle (Hexagon)
3rd row: *2 sc, 2 sc in next st.* Rep.*-* (24 sc)
4th row: *3 sc, 2 sc in next st.* Repeat *-* (30 sc)
5th round: *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st.* Repeat *-* (36 sc)
6th round: *5 sc, 2 sc in next st.* Repeat *-* (42 sc)
Round 7: *6 sc, 2 sc in the next st.* Repeat *-* (48 sc)

Crocheting a circle
Round 3: 1 sc, 2 sc in next st, *2 sc, 2 sc in next st* Repeat from * to *. End with 1 sc (you now have 2 sc next to each other again because you started with 1 sc) (24 sc)
4th row: *3 sc, 2 sc in next st.* Repeat *-* (30 sc)
Row 5: 2 sc, 2 sc in next st, *4 sc, 2 sc in next st*. Repeat from * to *. End with 2 sc (here, too, 4 sc worked side by side because you started with 2 sc) (36 sc)
6th round: *5 sc, 2 sc in next st.* Repeat *-* (42 sc)
Row 7: 3 sc, 2 sc in next st, *6 sc, 2 sc in next st*; repeat from * to *; end with 3 sc
For a perfect circle, shift the increases to the odd rows while still crocheting the same number of stitches between two increases.
