Crocheting a Shrug with Lana Grossa Royal Tweed

Crochet a Shrug – Crochet this stylish shrug as a unique addition to your wardrobe! This combination of a Cardigan and a Scarf is the perfect finishing touch for your outfit. It looks great over a T-shirt or dress. Do you want sleeves—or not? Choose your own version!

We crocheted this shrug using Royal Tweed, and what a result! We’re absolutely thrilled with the simple pattern and the beautiful result. Lana Grossa Royal Tweed is a classic yarn, spun from 100% extra-fine Merino wool. The relief stitch used in this pattern adds just that extra touch for a chic look. Perfect to wear to a party!

Dimensions:
Length: 66 cm.
Width without sleeves: 108 cm.
Sleeve length: 22 cm.

What do you need?

Yarn:

- 7 balls of sleeveless shrug, 9 balls of sleeved shrug in Lana Grossa Royal Tweed, color 11
- Crochet Hook sizes 6 and 6.5

Stitches used:
ch. = chain stitch
hv. = slip stitch
v. = single crochet
pcs. = double crochets
rstk. = relief double crochet: made by crocheting a double crochet in front of or behind another stitch from the previous round. So you don’t insert the Crochet Hook into the top of the stitch (through the loop), but around the stitch from the previous round. Insert your Crochet Hook from right to left, behind or in front of the stitch, and then crochet the double crochet as usual. Crochet 1 double crochet behind the stitch, 1 double crochet in front of the stitch. Repeat this throughout the entire round to create a border pattern.

Crochet Pattern for a shrug:

Using a size 6 crochet hook, loosely crochet a chain of 137 sts + 2 ch.

Round 1: 138 sts.
Rows 2 through 5: 138 double crochets.
6th round: continue using a size 6.5 crochet hook.
3 ch. (= 1 st.) 1 st. in the next 2 sts., 2 ch., skip 2 sts., *1 st. in the next 8 sts., 2 ch., skip 2 sts.* Repeat from * to *. End with 3 sts. and 1 ch.
Rows 7 through 48: repeat Row 6
49th round: continue with hook size 6, 138 sc.
Rows 50 through 53: 138 sts.
Stitch it up.

Fold the shrug in half lengthwise, with the right sides together. Sew the shrug closed, starting from the first row, for 20 cm. The section that remains open is the armhole. (13 cm.)

Sleeves:
Attach a strand of yarn to the armhole using a size 6 crochet hook and crochet 40 sts along the curve of the armhole; join with a sl st.

2nd row: *8 sts, 2 sts crocheted together* Repeat *-* (36 sts)
3rd–11th: 36 pcs.
Row 12: *4 sts, crochet 2 sts together* Repeat *-* (30 sts)
Rows 13 through 16: 30 sts.
Rows 17 through 19: 30 double crochets.

Alternative Yarns

In addition to Royal Tweed, you can also use other yarns to crochet this shrug. If you’re a fan of Merino wool, check out our blog post on Merino wool to see what varieties are available—just be sure to pay attention to the Needle Size you’re using. Would you rather use a mix with cotton yarn? Lana Grossa Organico or Katia Alaska (100% Acrylic, so it won’t itch) are good alternatives.
