Crocheting a miter for Sinterklaas—He’s coming, he’s coming…! Our beloved Sinterklaas is almost back in the country and, together with his helpers, will be visiting many a chimney. After all, well-behaved children deserve a whole basket, sack, or bag full of presents, don’t they? To give him a warm welcome, we’ve made this miter. That way, even the little ones can play at being Sinterklaas themselves.
Sinterklaas is coming to town again, and that’s sure to make many a child’s heart beat faster. We designed this fun miter especially for the occasion so we can give Sinterklaas an extra warm welcome. And alongside all the Pete hats, a real miter is a must-have, isn’t it?
Monique got to work using the sturdy Lana Grossa Cotton Mix 80 yarn (substitute this for Yarn and Colors Fabulous). By using a smaller Crochet Hook, it turns out nice and sturdy, and the Durable Glam cross adds the perfect finishing touch. Thanks to the handy adjustable strap, it can be adjusted to fit any head. Will you make a little helper of St. Nicholas happy with such a beautiful miter?
What do you need to crochet a Sinterklaas miter?
- 4 balls of Lana Grossa Cotton Mix 80, color 503. Lana Grossa Cotton Mix is no longer available. You can substitute 6 balls of Yarn and Colors Fabulous 032 Pepper.
- 1 ball of Durable Glam, color 2172 Cream
- 13 mm Snap Fasteners
- 1 ball of Durable Teddy, size 310
- Crochet Hook size 3 (for the miter), 4 (cast-on), 3.5 (miter), 8 (beard)
Stitches used:
l. = unload
hv. = slip stitch
v. = fasting
pc. = double crochet
lobster stitch
Stitch ratio of the miter:
Using a size 3.5 Crochet Hook:
5 x 5 cm = 10 stitches x 10 rows
Tip: Crochet the miter using a size 3.5 Crochet Hook; this will make it nice and sturdy. If you want to make it really sturdy, you can crochet electrical wire into the edge with the single crochet stitches that you work around both miters.
Crochet a gauge swatch for yourself; if the stitch count is correct, use a size 3.5 Crochet Hook. If the gauge swatch is larger, try a smaller Crochet Hook. If the gauge swatch is smaller than 5 x 5 cm, use a larger Crochet Hook; otherwise, the headband of the miter will be too small.
Crochet Pattern for a Mitre
Headband
: Be sure to measure the headband around your head to make sure it fits. Since you’ll be using snaps, if the headband is larger than your head, you can adjust it using the snaps—this gives you an adjustable headband, which is handy for the coming years.
The headband, made with 100 v. (as described in this pattern), should generally fit up to about age 8.
Start with a chain of 100 sts + 1 sl st using a size 4 Crochet Hook.

Using a 3.5 Crochet Hook, work a border of single crochet stitches around both pieces
At the 5 points of the miter, crochet 2 double crochets in 1 stitch.
To give the pieces a nice finish, crochet another lobster stitch along the edge using the Durable Glam yarn.
Crochet the decorative border on the miter using slip stitches, pulling the yarn through the stitches. For the first border, work each stitch into the edge you crocheted around the miter; the second border is about 1 cm from the first border.

Do the same on the other side at the same height.
Use a needle and thread to sew the cross onto the miter.
