The Sinterklaas celebration isn’t complete without the right decorations. Our Haakster, Annemarie Arts, understands this well and has crocheted a cheerful and festive Sinterklaas garland. The colorful Sinterklaas figures adorn the “jute” flags. Get started with this Crochet Pattern so you’ll be all set for the Sinterklaas celebration.
Sinterklaas garland - The little flags look just like jute because they’re made with the rugged Yarn and Colors Charming yarn. This yarn has a beautiful distressed look, and the color Limestone (color 9) closely resembles the color of jute. Each flag features a unique appliqué that’s perfect for the Sinterklaas celebration: Sinterklaas’s miter, two gifts in cheerful colors, Piet’s hat, and a carrot for Ozosnel. The string holding the five flags is especially festive thanks to the beautiful gold glitter thread. Above the fireplace, on the door, around the gift basket, or anywhere else—there’s always a great spot for the Sinterklaas garland!

Note: If your flag is larger, use a Crochet Hook that’s half a size smaller; if your flag is smaller, use a Crochet Hook that’s half a size larger. You can crochet 2 flags from one ball of Charming yarn.

Chain 13 along the other slanted side to the tip. Crochet 1 at the tip. Now crochet 34 along the other straight side.
Tuck away all loose ends neatly. If the chain stitches along the sides cause your flag to lose its shape, try crocheting the chain stitches with a Crochet Hook that’s half a size or a full size larger so they stay nice and straight. Wet the flag and stretch it into shape. Let it dry.
Making a string of flags
Crochet back and forth. After each row, chain 1 and turn your work. This turning chain does not count as a stitch.
Use a 2.5 mm Crochet Hook and White yarn.
Chain 10. Now crochet the first flag using 26 single crochets. Chain 10 between each flag. Crochet all five flags together in this way. After the last flag, chain 11. Turn your work. Now continue crocheting with a 2mm Crochet Hook. <-- If your chain pulls in too much with the 2mm Crochet Hook, continue crocheting with the 2.5mm Crochet Hook.
Round 1: Crochet 200 stitches back (200).
Rounds 2 through 4: Crochet 200 sts in each round (200).
Round 5: Continue crocheting with a 3mm Crochet Hook. Chain 200 (200). Fasten off. Neatly weave in all loose ends.
Finishing
: Using a 3mm Crochet Hook and Durable Glam, work a chain stitch between rows 1 and 2, and using Sunglow, work a chain stitch between rows 3 and 4. To do this, make a loop in your yarn. Insert your Crochet Hook through the loop. Insert your Crochet Hook between the first stitch on the front side and the back side of your work. Pick up your working yarn, pull it up through the stitch, and immediately pull it through the loop on your Crochet Hook. Insert your Crochet Hook one stitch further through your work and pick up your working yarn again. Don’t pull this too tight, or your line will pucker. If the chain stitches become too tight, you can always try a half or full size larger Crochet Hook. Neatly weave in all loose ends.
Threads
: Using a 2mm Crochet Hook and White yarn, chain 51. Crochet 50 slip stitches along the chain. Now use 1 single crochet to attach your string to the bottom of one end of your flag garland. Crochet 4 rows until you reach the top of that end, then crochet 51 rows again. Crochet 50 rows back along the chain and single crochet it closed. Weave in all loose ends neatly.
Do the same on the other side of the garland, but this time attach your first string to the top. This way, the slip knots will be on the front of the garland on both sides. You can use these crocheted strings to hang the garland nicely.
