Crochet a Summer Top - Sunny weather, a refreshing drink, and comfortable summer clothes. This top fits right into the perfect summer scene, which is why it’s so much fun to make and wear. Get started with this soft cotton yarn featuring subtle glitter, and let your homemade top make you shine this summer!
A handmade sweater is a must-have for your summer wardrobe! This stylish summer sweater is made from Rico Essentials Cotton Glitz DK. The soft cotton yarn is a joy to crochet with, and the colored glitter adds a dazzling effect to your sweater.

The top is crocheted in two pieces that are later joined together. The hem is crocheted in the sand stitch, and the rest of the top in the wedge stitch. The rows of the wedge stitch are connected in a few places, so the delicate stitch gives your top a light, airy feel. The pattern created by the wedge stitch resembles curled ivy leaves.
Choose your favorite color or mix it up! You can also choose to crochet two rounds in the same color; this will create a fun pattern that looks like intersecting diamonds.
Tools & Supplies:
- 6 x Rico Essentials Cotton Glitz DK, size 8
- Crochet Hooks sizes 3.5 and 4
- blunt-tipped needle
Stitches used:
l. = chain stitch
hv. = slip stitch
v. = single crochet
hst. = half double crochet
pc. = double crochet
dstk. = treble crochet
3dstk = 3 treble crochets
This pattern uses the sand stitch (border) and the wedge stitch.
The number of stitches in the sand stitch must be divisible by 2 + 1, plus 2 for the cast-on chain.
The arch span must be divisible by 6 + 1.
So the chain of length l that you start with must be divisible by 2 and also by 6
Stitch ratio of the wedge stitch:
Gauge swatch 10 x 10 cm = 23 stitches x 8 rows

To start this pattern, first measure your bust and hip circumferences. See which of the two is larger. If your bust is larger, use that measurement as your starting point; if your hips are larger, use that measurement instead.
Example:
Bust = 82 cm
Hip circumference = 86 cm
For this example, we’ll use a hip measurement of 86 cm. We’ll divide this by 2, which gives us 44 cm. We’ll adjust our chain stitch to this measurement. Crochet a chain that is 44 cm long (don’t stretch the chain; lay it flat on the table). Suppose this is 75 ch; this is not divisible by 6 or by 2. We’ll round up to 78 ch. To give the pattern a little extra room, we’ll add 6 more ch to those 78 ch. This brings us to 84 ch. + 1 for the pattern + 2 for the starting chain. Ultimately, we’ll have 87 ch. to start with.
Crochet Pattern for a summer top:
Front/back 2x
The top is made in size S.
To do this, I chained 90 sts + 1 st for the pattern + 2 sts for the cast-on chain (see example) using a size 4 Crochet Hook.
Continue with a 3.5 Crochet Hook using the sand stitch.
Round 1: Skip 2 ch. (counts as 1 sc.), 1 dc. in the next stitch, skip 1 stitch, in the next stitch *1 sc. and 1 dc., skip 1 stitch* Repeat *-* to the end of the round, ending with 1 sc. in the last stitch.
Row 2: 1 ch. (counts as 1 sc.), 1 dc. in the first stitch, skip 1 stitch, in the next stitch *1 sc. and 1 dc., skip 1 stitch* Repeat *-* to the end of the row, ending with 1 sc. in the last stitch.
Row 3: Repeat Row 2

Starting on row 4, we’ll crochet the wedge stitch.
4th row: 1 ch., 1 sc in first stitch,* 6 ch., 1 sc in the 2nd ch. from the Crochet Hook, 1 hdc in next ch., 1 dc in next ch., 1 tr. In the next ch., 1 triple treble in the next ch., skip 5 ch., 1 sc.* Repeat from * to * until the end of the round. You have now made small triangles across the entire round.
Round 5: 5 ch., *1 sc in the tip of the first triangle, 1 sc in the next stitch, 1 hdc in the next stitch, 1 tr in the next stitch, 1 dtr in the next stitch, 1 3-tr in the next stitch* Repeat from * to * until the second-to-last triangle. For the last triangle, crochet up to the double treble, then in the next stitch and the very last single crochet, work 2 triple trebles together.
Rows 6 through 35: Repeat rows 4 and 5 alternately.
Stitch it up.
If you want to make the top longer, crochet a few more rounds.

Shoulder straps (same for all sizes):
Round 1: Join a yarn in the 13th stitch from your side seam, 1 ch. (= 1st sc), * 6 ch., 1 sc in the 2nd ch. from the Crochet Hook, 1 hdc in the next ch., 1 dc in the next ch., 1 tr. In the next ch., 1 triple double crochet in the next ch., skip 5 ch., 1 single crochet.* Repeat *-* 3 more times, turn.
Round 2: Chain 5 to the tip of the first triangle, *1 sc in the tip of the second triangle, 1 sc in the next stitch, 1 hdc in the next stitch, 1 tr in the next stitch, 1 double tr in the next stitch, 1 triple tr in the next stitch* Repeat *-* one more time. Finish with 1 sc in the tip of the last triangle. Turn.
Round 3: 1 ch., 1 sc in first stitch,* 6 ch., 1 sc in the 2nd ch. from the Crochet Hook, 1 hdc in next ch., 1 dc in next ch., 1 tr. In the next ch., 1 triple treble in the next ch., skip 5 ch., 1 sc.* Repeat from * to * one more time.

Round 4: 5 ch., 1 sc in the tip of the first triangle, 1 sc in the next stitch, 1 hdc in the next stitch, 1 tr in the next stitch, 1 double tr in the next stitch, 1 triple tr in the next stitch. Crochet the last triangle up to the double treble crochet; in the next stitch and the very last single crochet, work 2 triple treble crochets together.
Rows 5 through 12: Alternate between repeating rows 3 and 4.
Check to see if this shoulder strap length works for you; if you'd like it longer, crochet a few more rows.
Crochet another shoulder strap this way.
To neatly join the pieces together, crochet a row of slip stitches along the side seams (don’t pull them too tight!). Next, sew the side seams and shoulder seams together with a needle and thread. Finally, crochet a border of single crochet stitches along the neckline and armholes.
