Crocheting the Waffle Stitch

The waffle stitch is suitable for large projects and is crocheted using various types of double crochets. The waffle stitch is often used for baby blankets—such as crib blankets and cot blankets—as well as larger blankets. It’s also commonly used for home decor and practical accessories like pot holders, baskets, scarves, and more.

What kind of yarn do you use for the waffle stitch?

Keep in mind that the waffle stitch is a compact, single crochet stitch. So it’s important to choose the right yarn so your blanket or other project doesn’t end up too heavy. Crochet Pattern: Crocheting the Waffle Stitch

How do you crochet the waffle stitch?

The waffle stitch is actually more of a pattern than a stitch. You repeat the same 2 rounds over and over. This creates a waffle-like texture on your crochet work using raised double crochets. Below, we explain the exact steps for the waffle stitch!

Needle Size: Cast on with a 6 mm needle; continue crocheting with a 5.5 mm needle.

Start with a chain of a number of chain stitches that is divisible by 3 + 5.

Round 1: Crochet 1 double crochet in the 4th chain stitch of your chain, then 1 double crochet in each chain stitch, ending with 2 chain stitches.

Row 2: Crochet 1 relief double crochet around the first double crochet of the previous row, then 2 double crochets. *1 relief double crochet around the double crochet of the previous row, then 2 double crochets*; repeat this until the end of the row, and finish with 2 chain stitches.

Round 3: Crochet 2 relief double crochets into the double crochets from the previous round and 1 double crochet into the relief double crochet from the previous round. Repeat this until the end of the round and finish with 2 chain stitches.

4th row: Work a relief double crochet in the double crochet from the previous row, then 2 double crochets in each relief double crochet from the previous row. Repeat this until the end of the row, and finish with 2 chain stitches.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you reach your desired height.
