Tunisian Crochet - Yes, the last lesson, and the garland is finished! We’re going to crochet a few more squares, combine stitches, and embroider the popular little heart. Of course, we’ll crochet all the little flags together to make a cheerful garland. Are you ready?
Once you've learned the five basic stitches, you'll have a good grasp of Tunisian crochet. In this final lesson, we'll combine the stitches, embroider, and, of course, crochet all the chain stitches together.
To complete the garland, we’ll crochet five combination squares. These combine both stitches and colors, and you can put together your own favorite squares. You can use your own creativity to design the patterns; Annemarie provides some examples below.
The video provides step-by-step instructions on how to change colors, combine stitches, and, of course, how to embroider on your crochet piece.
What do you need?
- Tunisian Crochet Hook 5.5 mm
- Crochet Hook 3 and 5 mm
- Stopping needle for embroidery
- Phildar Phil Coton 4 colors 75, 86, 78, 68, 58, and 3
- Row Counter

Embroidery:
You can easily embroider cross-stitches using the basic stitch. By sketching your favorite design on graph paper, you can then follow the count pattern and embroider on the squares of the basic stitch.
Changing colors:
There are several ways to change colors when crocheting Tunisian-style. Alternate colors in the going and/or returning rows and see what effect it creates!
For a fun variation and a creative effect, you can combine different colors and stitches. By placing your piece on top of a base piece while crocheting, you can estimate how many rounds you’ll need when combining stitches. As you saw with the base pieces, some stitches vary in height. This way, the little flags will all be the same size.
Crochet pieces together to make a garland
We crocheted the squares together as follows:
We use a 3mm Crochet Hook for this.
Crochet 120 chain stitches in color Ciel (3). Now attach the first flag to the top using single crochet stitches.
Between each flag, chain 8 before single crocheting the next flag.
After the last flag, chain 121. Turn your work and crochet one round of single crochet back. At the end of your round, chain 1 and turn your work. Crochet one final round of single crochet back. Fasten off.
Now make a starting loop in Jade (58). Insert your Crochet Hook at the beginning of your Ribbon between the two rows of single crochets, pick up the loop, and pull it up through your work. Insert your Crochet Hook one stitch further through the work, yarn over, and pull the yarn through your work, pulling it up through the loop on the Crochet Hook at the same time. Continue crocheting this way until the end of the row; you will have worked half slip stitches on your piece.
