Tunisian crochet is all the rage! Because this fun crochet technique lends itself well to all kinds of textures, you can create endless variations. Annemarie is totally hooked and wants to spread the “Tunisian crochet bug” to everyone. Want to learn Tunisian crochet, too? Join this fun Crochet Along and make a poncho using 9 different Tunisian stitches!
The Tunisian poncho CAL is over. Of course, you can still get started. Order the Yarn Kit and download the free patterns at the bottom of this blog. Then you’ll be able to enjoy it endlessly too—because how cute is this poncho?
The poncho is made from Lana Grossa Cotton Mix 130, a soft yarn composed of 50% Cotton and 50% Acrylic. The standard Needle Size for this yarn is usually 3.5–4 mm, but thicker (Tunisian) Crochet Hooks are used for this poncho. Because Tunisian stitches are more compact, a thicker Crochet Hook is needed to achieve a beautiful and supple result.

Crochet Patterns: Tunisian Poncho CAL
Pattern instructions:
In Tunisian crochet, there is a forward stitch and a backward stitch; together, these two form one stitch.
Some stitches are crocheted with a 6mm Crochet Hook because they are tighter than other stitches. You’ll notice that the work shrinks a bit as you crochet. Once you’ve stretched it out and assembled it, it will look just right.

FAQ About the Tunisian Poncho CAL:
-
What if my fabric piece isn't square?
Your square might not turn out perfectly square. That’s absolutely fine, as long as you stick to the correct number of rows. It will become a nice, square shape later when you block it. -
What are the dimensions of the poncho?
The poncho measures approximately 68 x 68 cm, measured flat with the front and back panels laid together. Each block measures approximately 20 x 20 cm, though this may vary slightly depending on the number of stitches (up to a maximum difference of 2 cm). -
How can I make the poncho bigger or smaller?
You can make the poncho larger or smaller yourself. Keep the following points in mind:
- The number of stitches must be divisible by 3 + 2, and it must be an even number.
- To measure is to know. Keep measuring your block carefully until it forms a square. Once your first block (Tunisian basic stitch) is correct, you can use the same number of stitches and rows for the other blocks.
- Note that for rows 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, you decrease one stitch because you pick up your last stitch from the side. -
Will the patterns always remain online?
Yes! The patterns will remain available online on this blog. That way, you can start the poncho CAL anytime or pick it up again later. -
Why are there 10 lessons but only 9 stitches?
In the final week, we'll finish up the poncho and assemble it. We'll also add a border around the edges to give it a nice, neat finish.
