Tunisian crochet is a fun crochet technique in which you alternate between leaving your stitches on the crochet hook and letting them drop. The technique offers a wide variety of possibilities and stitches, allowing for endless variations. Annemarie has designed a lovely scarf that combines four different stitches. By crocheting the scarf lengthwise, different bands are created, and the stitches really stand out.

The scarf is crocheted with Yarn and Colors Fabulous, a cotton-Acrylic blend. The yarn comes in a wide range of colors—no fewer than 50—and its composition makes it ideal for all kinds of projects. So pick your favorite color and get started!

Crochet Pattern for a Tunisian Scarf:

The scarf is crocheted lengthwise in 5 different strips. The video at the bottom of this blog explains the stitches in detail.

Row 1 of the scarf:
Using a 10mm Crochet Hook, chain 4. You will now crochet the Tunisian basic stitch.

Row 1: Insert the Crochet Hook into the 2nd chain stitch from the Crochet Hook. To determine which chain stitch is the 2nd one, look at where your working yarn comes out. The chain stitch where your working yarn comes out
If you come to one, skip it; the next one is the 2nd chain stitch from the Crochet Hook. Insert the Crochet Hook, make a yarn over with the Crochet Hook, and pull the yarn through the stitch. Leave the yarn over on your Crochet Hook. You now have 2 loops on your Crochet Hook. * Insert the Crochet Hook into the next chain stitch, make a yarn over with the Crochet Hook, and pull the yarn through the stitch. Leave the yarn over on your Crochet Hook *. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.

Row 2: Chain 1, then pull the chain through 1 loop on your Crochet Hook. * Chain 1, then pull through 2 loops on the Crochet Hook *. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row, until you have 1 loop left on your Crochet Hook.

Row 3: If you look at your stitches now, you'll see that vertical lines have formed.
Skip the first vertical stripe. Insert your Crochet Hook into the front of the fabric on the right side, just below the second vertical stripe. Make a yarn over and pull the yarn over through the space below the stripe so that a second loop forms on your Crochet Hook. Repeat this for all the vertical stripes you see. The last one is right at the edge of your crochet work.

Alternate between rows 2 and 3 until you have crocheted a total of 288 rows. You will now decrease using a 12mm Crochet Hook. Just as you did in row 2, make a yarn over on your Crochet Hook but immediately pull it through the loop on the Crochet Hook. Do this for all stitches, and finally pull the end thread through the last loop.

Row 2 of the scarf:
Using a 10mm Crochet Hook, attach a new strand of yarn to the underside of Row 1 of the first row. Chain 7. In this row, you will crochet the Tunisian stitch with skipped loops.

Row 1: Now stitch the Crochet Hook into the 2nd chain stitch from the Crochet Hook. To determine which chain stitch is the 2nd one, look at where your working yarn comes out. The chain stitch where your working yarn comes out

Row 3: If you look at your stitches now, you’ll see that vertical stripes have formed. Skip the first vertical stripe. * First, make a yarn over around the Crochet Hook. Insert your Crochet Hook through the front of the fabric on the right side, just below the second vertical stripe. Yarn over and pull the yarn over through the space below the line so that there is one more loop on the Crochet Hook. Because you yarned over, you now have 3 loops on the Crochet Hook. Insert your Crochet Hook under the next vertical line on the right side. Yarn over and pull the yarn over through the stitch, leaving it on the Crochet Hook. Now insert the Crochet Hook one last time under the next vertical line on the front side. Yarn over, pull the yarn through the stitch, and leave it on the Crochet Hook. Now slide the yarn over you made for these three stitches from right to left over the three loops on the Crochet Hook and let it slide off your Crochet Hook *. Repeat from * to * one more time. Before you start crocheting back, insert the Crochet Hook into the side of the first row. Make a yarn over and pull through.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you reach the top of panel 1. Fasten off this row using a 12mm Crochet Hook, just as you did for panel 1.

Row 3 of the scarf:
Using a 12mm Crochet Hook, attach a new strand of yarn to the underside of Row 1 of the second row. Chain 4. In this row, you will crochet the Tunisian stockinette stitch.

Insert your Crochet Hook from right to left through the loop to the other side of the fabric. Make a yarn over and pull the yarn over through the stitch. You now have a second loop on your Crochet Hook. Repeat this until the end of the round. Before you start crocheting back, stitch the Crochet Hook into the side of the second row. Make a yarn over and pull the Crochet Hook through all three lines at once. You now have 2 loops on the Crochet Hook. Stitch the Crochet Hook under the middle vertical line of the three lines from right to left and make a yarn over. You now have 3 loops on the Crochet Hook. Stitch the Crochet Hook under the first vertical line of the three lines from right to left and make a yarn over. You now have 4 loops on the Crochet Hook *. You are now going to crochet the basic Tunisian stitch.

Yarn over and pull through.

Row 2: * Make a yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the Crochet Hook *. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row, until you have 1 loop left on your Crochet Hook.

Row 3: If you look at your stitches now, you'll see that vertical lines have formed.
Skip the first vertical stripe. Stitch your Crochet Hook through the front of the right-side piece, just below the second vertical stripe. Make a yarn over and pull it through the loop below the stripe so that a second loop forms on your Crochet Hook. Before you crochet back, insert the Crochet Hook into the side of the fourth stripe. Make a yarn over and pull through.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you reach the top of section 4. Fasten off this row with a 12mm Crochet Hook, just as you did for sections 1, 2, and 3.

Finishing:
Using a 9mm Crochet Hook, attach a new strand of yarn to one of the corners and crochet a round of single crochets all the way around the Scarf. At the corners, chain 1. Make sure to crochet an equal number of stitches on both the bottom and top edges of the Scarf. Do not fasten off; instead, continue with a 10mm Crochet Hook and crochet 1 round of slip stitches all the way around. Fasten off. If your scarf starts to puff up too much, you can also crochet the last round with a 12mm Crochet Hook instead of a 10mm one. Neatly weave in all loose ends.

I added fringe to the pink scarf. I attached the fringe to the stitches at the top and bottom, leaving one stitch free between each piece of fringe. In total, I ended up with 13 pieces of fringe at the ends of the scarf.

For each fringe, I cut 3 strands, each 30 cm long. Fold them in half. Insert your Crochet Hook through the stitch from top to bottom and pull the fold upward. Pull the ends of the strands through the loop you’ve pulled up and tighten. Trim the fringes to the same length.
