Crocheted Winter Olympics Wall Hanging

Are you all set for the start of the Olympic Games? We’ll admit it: we’ve definitely caught a bit of Olympic speed skating fever! Cheering on Jutta and Joep, we’re crocheting this cute wall hanging, especially for the Winter Games! Go Holland, go!

This crocheted wall hanging is a simple project to work on in your spare time. If you’re watching that exciting game anyway, you might as well combine it with crocheting. Since this brand’s yarns are available in no fewer than 140 colors, we quickly chose Yarn and Colors. The Olympic rings were therefore made with the Epic yarn. For the supporters, we chose the Must-have Minis, because they have the ideal length.

1. The rings on the wall hanger:

Before you start crocheting the rings, first cut through 2 rings at one point using a pair of wire cutters. It’s best to do this along the weld seam.

First, you’ll crochet around the entire ring. Crochet 1 ring in Sapphire, 1 ring in Black, and 1 ring in Cardinal. Using a 4mm Crochet Hook, work 70 single crochets around the ring. Now switch to a 3mm Crochet Hook and work 70 slip stitches into the single crochets. Fasten off. Weave in the ends neatly. Crochet the other two full rings in the same way. Now crochet the open rings using Sunflower and Peony Leaf. Crochet around these rings in the same way, but before you crochet the slip stitches in the second round, first slide them together as shown in the image below. Now use strong tape to seal the ring closed again and slide your crochet work together. Crochet the slip stitches. Do the same with the other ring. The rings are now loose. Secure them together with a few small single crochets in the appropriate colors. (See the image where the dot is.) Make sure to keep your knots and loose ends on the back of the rings.

Row 3: Crochet 2 single crochets in every 2nd single crochet (18).
Row 4: Chain 1. *Crochet 2 single crochets in the next single crochet, then crochet 2 single crochets*. Repeat from *to*, until the end of the row, but end with 1 single crochet (24).
Row 5: Crochet 24 single crochets (24).
Row 6: Crochet 2 dc in every 4th dc (30).

Before continuing to crochet, attach the safety eyes between rows 7 and 8, spacing them 2 holes apart.

Row 13: Make 6 decreases. Crochet every 3rd and 4th st together (18).
Row 14: Make 6 decreases. Crochet every 2nd and 3rd single crochet together (12). Now stuff the head firmly with Stuffing.

Crochet another head just like this one.

Crochet another hat just like this one.

4. The Little Boy's Scarf

The scarf is crocheted back and forth. After each row, chain 1 and turn your work. This chain stitch does not count as a stitch. Leave slightly longer starting and ending threads at the color changes so you can let them hang as fringes later.

Row 1: Using a 2mm Crochet Hook and Orange yarn, chain 60 stitches.
Now crochet into the chain *2 sc in the first ch, skip 1 ch*. Repeat *to*, until the end of the chain, but finish with 1 sc in the last ch. Also, change to Cardinal in the last stitch.
Row 2: Now crochet *2 sc in the first sc, skip 1 sc*. Repeat *to*, until the end of the row, but finish with 1 sc in the last sc. Change to White for the last sc.
Row 3: Repeat Row 2, changing to Sapphire on the last stitch.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2, changing to Orange on the last stitch.
Row 5: Repeat Row 2. Bind off. Set the Scarf aside for a moment.

Button another orange fringe to the ends at the corners, and trim the fringes to the desired length.

5. The Girl's Little Collar

Crochet with a 2mm Crochet Hook and Orange yarn.

Row 1: Chain 26. Sl st in the first ch to form a loop. Now work 26 dc across the chain stitches. Change to Cardinal in the last stitch.
Row 2: * Crochet 1 sc in the first sc, chain 1, skip 1 sc*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row; finish with 1 sl st in the first sc. Fasten off.
Row 3: Using White, attach a new strand of yarn to the chain (ch) from the previous row. Now repeat Row 2, but crochet the single crochet (sc) around the chain (ch) from the previous row. Finish with 1 slip stitch (sl st) in the first sc.
Row 4: Using Sapphire, attach a new strand of yarn to the l from the previous row. Now repeat Row 3. Finish with 1 sl st in the first sc.
Row 5: Join a new strand of Orange yarn. Crochet 26 single crochets. Fasten off. Neatly weave in all ends.

Finishing Touches: Little Boy
Fold the scarf as if you were going to button it. Make sure you have one short end and one longer end. Secure it with a small stitch so it stays in place. Pin the scarf all around the bottom of the head, then use orange thread to sew it to the bottom of the head with small stitches all around.
Put a small amount of stuffing inside the hat and pin it to the head at a slight angle toward the back. Single crochet it all the way around, but do this between rows 10 and 11 of the hat, so that the brim remains clearly visible.
Using pearl thread, embroider a little nose in the center of the face, and using cardinal thread, embroider a crooked little mouth.
If you like, add a few more touches of blush to your cheeks.

Finishing Touches: Girl
Cut the Chestnut yarn into 18 strands. Divide them into 9 strands on each side.
Now fold a strand of yarn in half. Insert your Crochet Hook between rows 5 and 6 on the side of the head, and pull the folded loop under a stitch. Pull the ends through the folded loop to tighten. Attach a total of 9 strands on both sides of the head between rows 5 and 6.
Now make small braids about 4 cm long on both sides of the head. Tie a small orange thread to the ends of each braid. Then cut the threads about 1 cm below the braid.
Now single crochet the hat in the same way as you did for the little boy. Make sure the hat covers the starting points of the braids.
Now pin the collar securely all around the bottom of the head, and sew it firmly in place with small stitches all around.
Using pearl thread, embroider a little nose in the center of the face, and using cardinal thread, embroider a little mouth.
If you like, add a few more touches of blush to your cheeks.

Now secure both heads firmly to the rings with a few single crochets. Attach a string to the red and blue rings so you can hang your crochet project, and voilà—your wall hanging is done!
