Essentials Cotton Baby Sweater - Making your own baby clothes might be the most fun thing to do! You can of course knit and crochet items for your own little one, but what do you think about making your own unique baby shower gift? Pick cheerful, soft of bright colours and knit a lovely sweater for any little one. Continue reading for the free knitting pattern!

This baby sweater is made of the soft and glossy Rico Essentials Cotton dk. This100% cotton yarn is available in 58 different colours, so there are plenty of beautiful colour combinations to make. Our sweater is made with fresh blue colours, but why don't you try a combination of green, yellow or purple? For making the smallest sizes you'll only need 1 ball of each colour!

The striped sweater is almost entirely made of the stocking stitch. The different striped motives in soft colours result in a playfool look. In the instruction video you can see how the sleeves are sown into the armholes.

Materials
New-born & 3 months:
- 1 ball Rico Essentials Cotton dk colour 27 Light blue, 35 Pigeon blue and 80 White.

6 months:
- 1 ball Rico Essentials Cotton dk colour 27 Light blue and 80 White
- 2 balls Rico Essentials Cotton dk colour 35 Pigeon blue

Double pointed needles 20 cm long 3,5mm
Transparent snap fasteners 10mm

Essentials Cotton Baby Sweater - Free Knitting Pattern

Stitches used
Stocking stitch & Garter stitch
Increase 1 st. by knitting the stitch after the edge stitch 2 times.

Colour scheme A (for the front and back)

  • 1 purl row and 1 knit row with colour 27.
  • 6 knit rows with colour 35.
  • 8 knit rows with colour 80.

Colour scheme B (for the sleeves and front yoke)

  • 2 knit rows with colour 35, 2 knit rows with colour 27.

Swatch
10 x10 cm = 22 sts. x 36 rows

This sweater is knitted in the round until the armholes. After that the front and back will be knitted separately. The front yoke will be knitted on 2 needles. The sleeves will also be knitted in the round until the decreases for the sleeve cap. The sleeve cap will be continued in stocking stitch.

Front and Back
Cast on 1) 100 sts., 2) 104 sts., 3) 112 sts. with colour 27 and divide the stitches over the 4 needles. Continue in the round by knitting 1 row with colour 27, then 6 rows with colour 35 and 8 rows with colour 35. Continue according to colour scheme A until your work measures 1) 13 cm, 2) 15 cm, 3) 17 cm.

Continue with the back over 1) 50 sts. , 2) 52 sts., 3) 56 sts. and work with 2 needles only. Decrease on both sides 1x3 sts., then every 2nd row 1 x 2 sts. and 1 x 1 st. You’ll get 1) 38 sts., 2) 40 sts., 3) 44 sts.

At a total height of 1) 20 cm, 2) 23 cm, 3) 26 cm cast off the middle 1) 2) 16 sts. 3) 18 sts. Continue with 1) 11 sts., 2) 12 sts., 3) 13 sts. separately for both shoulders and cast off at a total height of 1) 23cm, 2) 26 cm 3) 29 cm.

For the front repeat this pattern but cast off all 1) 38 sts., 2) 40 sts., 3) 44 sts. at a total height of 1) 17,5 cm, 2) 19,5 cm, 3) 21,5 cm.

Front Yoke
This will be knitted transverse.
Cast on 1) 12 sts., 2) 13 sts., 3) 15 sts. and work according to colour scheme B until your work measures 4,5 cm. In the next wrong side row cast off the first 7 sts. and continue with the remaining stitches until your work measures 1) 12,5 cm, 2) 13,5 cm , 3) 15,5 cm. In the first row of the next colour change cast on 7 sts. and continue with the 1) 12 sts., 2) 13 sts., 3) 15sts. until your work measures 1) 17 cm, 2) 18 cm, 3) 20cm.

Sleeves
Cast on 1) 32 sts., 2) 34 sts., 3) 36 sts. with colour 35 and divide them over 4 needles. Continue with colour scheme B in the round.

Increase on both sides 1) every the 8th row 4 x 1 st., 2) every the 10th row 5x 1 st., 3) every 8th row 7 x 1 st. You’ll get a total of 1) 40 sts., 2) 44 sts., 3) 50 sts.

At a total height of 1) 9 cm, 2) 14 cm, 3) 16 cm continue with 2 needles. Start casting off for the sleeve cap and cast off on both sides

  • 1) 1 x 3 sts., each 2nd row 1 x 2 sts., 5 x 1 sts., 1 x 3 sts., and 1 x 4 sts. Cast off the remaining 6 sts.
  • 2) 1 x 3 sts., each 2nd row 1 x 2 sts., 5 x 1 sts., 1 x 3 sts. and 1 x 2 sts. Cast off the remaining 10 sts.
  • 3) 1 x 3 sts., each 2nd row 1 x 2 sts., 5 x 1 sts., 1 x 3 sts. and 1 x 4 sts. Cast off the remaining 10 sts.

Finishing
Sew the yoke onto the front with an invisible seam. Close the shoulders. The front will overlap 1 cm with the back. Sew the sleeves in the armholes and attach 2 snap fasteners on each shoulder.
